なんで南北米大陸、いや西半球の原住民のひとびとがインディアンと呼ばれるようになったかのいきさつは、たいていのひとは知っているでしょう。これ はみんなコロンブスのせいです。彼はいままでその存在がほとんど知られていなかった大陸に到着したので、自分は目的地のインドに来たと信じて疑わなかっ た、そこでそこに住むひとびとをインディアンと呼んだのだ・・・とね。

しかしながらその彼も、２回目の航海あたりから、なんだかやっぱり、自分はまったく新しい場所にたどり着いたようだと気づいた。ところがインディア ンという言葉は、それにもかかわらず、非常に急速にヨーロッパ人の間に浸透していった。コロンブスと前後した時代の探検家でアメリゴ・ヴェスプッチという 人物がいた。そこでこの大陸は、コロンブス大陸にはならないで、アメリカ大陸と呼ばれるようになったいきさつも、みんなよく知ってるでしょう。そこでアメ リカ大陸に昔から住んでいたひとびとは、アメリカン・インディアンということになり、もうこの言葉は５００年近い歴史を持ってます。

What comes in your mind when you hear the word "INDIANS". Would it be the Indigenous People of the Western Hemisphere" or the "Hindastan" of the Indian subcontinent? In my assumption, most people would associate the word of the former, rather than latter.
Many people know it is the Christopher Columbus' fault that the people who are nothing to do with the people of the subcontinent are so known ever since his "discovery".

Then, although through sketchy circumstances that are available to us, Columbus seemed to realize toward the end of his days that his initial notion was wrong, the original people of the Carribean to the Continent were quickly known as the "Indian". Ever since, more than five hundred years has passed. This time span is more than enough for one notion, albeit the misconception had given many chances to rectify, to take very firm root. Today, this word is hard to uproot for replacement of another.
However, recent decades have seen a renaissance of the "Indian" culture, following the American Indian Movement of early 70s. Then many suggestions were made to change the name.

ところである日、私のところにある女子大生からイーメールが来ました。そのひとは大学でアメリカ文化史のゼミを取っているが、そのゼミの先生はアメ リカ・インディアンというと怒るのです、といっていました。私はそこで、なぜですかと尋ねますと、アメリカ・インディアンというのは失礼な名前で、ネイ ティヴ・アメリカンというのが正しいからだとおっしゃったそうです。

そこで私はいろいろ考えた。でもまあ、その思考経路は省いて結論だけをいいましょう。これは私の考えですが、どっちの呼び名も別段間違いではない し、かといって正しくもないのですよ。

もういったように、アメリカン・インディアンという表現は、すでに５００年の歴史がある。５００年も経つと言葉というものは定着して、ひとびとはそ れに抵抗を感じなくなるね。インディアンのひとびともこれは同じです。

そもそもインディアンのひとびとは、自分はインディアンという民族に属するなんて考えていない。彼らは自分をダコタとかシャイアンとか、ナヴァホだとか、クリーだとか、アラパホだとか、ショショニだとか、ヒカリ ヤ・アパッチだとか、ランビーだとか、オマハだとか、オーセッジだとか、ピクアだとか、ユウツだとか、タオス・プエブロだとか、ヤキマだとか、とにかくそ ういう風に自分を部族員として考えているね。だから他人が自分をインディアンと呼んでいるこ とは、外向きでは承知しているが、「なに、それ？」という感じで生きている。つまりインディアンという名称は、自分は白人でも黒人でも黄色人種でもない、 という認識として受け入れてはいるが、だからといって、それが自分の名前だとは思っていないのであります。これは日本人が自分はアジア人ではあるが、やは り日本人だというようなものです。

そこでこんどは、ネイティヴ・アメリカン。この言葉はインディアン市民権運動以来の言 葉です。べつにファースト・アメリカンなどという名前が正しいというひともいる。しかしこれ はあまり人気がないので、問題はやはりアメリカン・インディアンか、ネイティヴ・アメリカンかとなります。

One day, I received an e-mail from a young Japanese college student studying American history. She said her instructor does not like word "Indian", and insists that they should be called "Native Americans".
That made me read hard and think hard. Then, I come to believe that both are neither wrong, nor correct.
All Indian peoples does not seem to think they belong to a race called Indians. They think they are Dakotas, Arapahoes, Hopis, Navajos, Apaches, Cree, Shoshoni, Omahas, Piquas, Utes, Taos Pueblos, Yakimas, Inuits ---- list goes on and on (after all, there are more than five hundred so-called Federally Recognized Tribes, plus numerous non-Recognized tribes).
They are the members of their respective tribes, and many are products of inter-tribal marriages, thus idenfifies themselve with dual (or more) tribal backgrounds. Inidan is to them, a term associated only as a distinction from Caucasian, Negroid, and Mongoroid races.

Now, as I mentioned earlier, there are an enormous sense of self pride among Indian peoples in recent decades, after centuries of assaults upon their cultures, religions, and societal institutions via forced assimilation policies carried out by the conqueror. Thus terms such as the "Native Americans", and the "First Americans" were created mostly by the Indian people themselves. This is still an unsettled territory.

ところがネイティヴっていうのは、そこで生まれたひと（もの）って意味ね。つまり私の 例で言うと、スーザン小山はアメリカに永年住んでいるが、日本生まれの日本育ちだから、ネイティヴ・オヴ・ ジャパンです。そこでアメリカで生まれたひとは、肌が黒くても白くても黄色でも茶色でも、みんなネイティヴね。なにもインディアンでなくて もいいのですよ。

私のいいたいことわかるかな？つまりネイティヴ・アメリカンというのは、これまた正しい呼び名ではないわけね。アメリカン・インディアン市民権運動 の大御所として知られているラッセル・ミーンズのホームページにこないだ寄ってみたら、彼は その通りのことをいっている。ネイティヴ・アメリカンというなら、西半球で生まれた人間なら誰でもそういう呼び名になり、なにもアメリカン・インディアン （つまり南北米大陸の先住民）でなくてもよいことになるのだ、とね。

彼はだから、アメリカン・インディアンという名前を一般名称として好むとのことでした。インディアンのなかにもいろいろことなる見解があるが、私は 彼らについて、十把一からげに扱うのが失礼なので、それぞれの部族背景をちゃんと知り、それさえ認識していれば、一般名称としてはアメリカ・インディアン でよい、というふうに考えているのです。みなさんはどうかな？

On the other hand, some Indians believe "Indian" to be more accurate term. Such belief is eloquently expressed by no other than Mr. Russel Means. In his site, he says that the word is derived from Spanish "En Dio" -- the one with god, dismissing the long held theory which goes all the way back to Columbus' misnaming. He also asserts that anyone who were born in the Western Hemisphere with or without Indian blood, are Native Americans, thus this is also a misnomer, and not an accurate reflection of the trie matire of the people who are original inhabitants of this Continents.
Not all tribal members support Mr. Russel's opinion.
